Who we are

NATURE AND SPECIAL PURPOSE

The congregation is of diocesan right with public vows, dedicated to apostolic life in the church. By our consecration, we strive to follow Jesus Christ, the Divine Redeemer, sharing in His consecration to the Father and His redemptive mission in the Church. As part of this mission we endeavour to make with joy any sacrifice to which God's grace invites us to go wherever community obedience assigns us.

CHARISM

Sensitive to the needs of the Church of the then Diocese of Accra, Bishop Bowers of blessed memory founded the congregation dedicated to the moral and Christian elevation of women by prayer, teaching and example.

APOSTOLATE

The Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer undertake the following apostolate:

1. Christian and moral education of girls/women (spiritual ie. Teaching of catechism, and academic)
2. Caring of the sick and poor, people living with HIV/AIDS related cases and care of orphans
3. Maternal care
4. Visiting the sick
5. Making of Liturgical Vestments
6. Baking of altar bread
7. Secretarial and Administrative services
8. Promoting ecumenism as well as undertaking any other works of charity in line with the charism of our congregation.

SPIRITUALITY

We look up to Mary the Mother of God and our Mother at the foot of the Cross. She was humble and went to serve her cousin Elizabeth the moment she was told of the conception of John the Baptist. She forgot all about herself and went to serve. She stood at the cross and shared in the redemptive mission of her beloved Son till the end. Her presence at Calvary consoled her son, the Redeemer of the human race. So the Handmaids having been saved look up with humility to Mary to serve and share in the passion of the Divine Redeemer. For this reason, we the Handmaids take special cognizance and devotion of the praying of the daily Rosary, the station of the cross and visit of the Blessed Sacrament.
